The Fig Tree and the Mulberry tells the story of Anna Turner, evacuated as a six-year-old from wartime London, all the way to New Zealand, across an ocean patrolled by U-boats, to live with unknown relatives. Six years later she is told she has to return, to an England she no longer recognises, to a family she no longer remembers. She takes her prized possessions with her: a Maori talisman or tiki, a jar of mulberry-jam, and her jealously-guarded memories of New Zealand - but before she reaches London, she is in danger of losing them all.
